Time to Transfusion Study

The aim of this project is to determine the amount of time between release of a blood product from the hospital blood bank, to the initiation of transfusion.
These data are important for two reasons:

1. If the time lag is found to be within an acceptable range, then the hospital blood bank computer system recorded release time can be used as a surrogate measure for blood product transfusion time. This surrogate measure, if validated by this research, can then be used as a measure in future research projects, meaning future projects would not require direct review of patient files.

2. This is a quality assurance assessment that will determine whether the Clinical Practice Guidelines for Use of Blood Components are being followed correctly. According to the guidelines transfusion of a blood product must be initiated within 30 minutes of product release from the blood bank or returned to the blood bank. The time when the transfusion is initiated must also be recorded in the patient notes. Previous research conducted by Monash University and the DHS

Data will be collected for every day of the week at two locations; St Vincent's Public Hospital and The Alfred Hospital. Once the data has been analysed from these locations a decision will be made if more sites needs to be included into the study such as a regional hospital.
